Antarctica: Midnight Sun At New Year's.

I don't typically go out for New Year's Eve.

Last year was an exception, due to being in Bermuda with Frogger and Human. Normally, this introvert likes to recharge by staying in and watching movies. Sure, there's usually a half-bottle of Veuve Cliquot purchased that I get partially through. But that's about as exciting as it gets. It's never a bumpy night.

This year, though, my New Year's celebration took place on a ship, coming out of the Drake Passage. Thankfully we had made it past the wild and bumpy part, so no Dramamine was needed for the evening to combat motion sickness. And this meant it was time to party!

Just shortly before midnight, we gathered on the deck at the stern of the ship. We were led in a countdown by our expedition leader, Shane.

Very different, counting down to midnight with the Sun still out and keeping us company. It helped set the "celebration mood" by being overcast.

This is one of the friends I made on the ship, J. Making friends on the expedition was very easy. There were many people on the trip traveling solo, like myself. And it was a great test of getting out of your comfort zone by celebrating New Year's on a ship in the middle of the ocean with people you have known for about 48 hours.

After hugging about a half dozen people we had just met and spilling champagne everywhere, a light snow started to fall on us... Suggesting we head back inside to the lounge.

A horrible selfie taken back inside. But a lot of fun still to be had for about another hour or so...

Only to be woken up a few hours later to some excitement...

To be continued...
