Election Tuesday.

Hope you all have a stress-free day! And I hope the election goes the way you want it to go.

I am not voting today... But I am hoping for a BLUE victory in the presidential race. (And I am quite sure it will happen!)

I hope the voting lines aren't too long today for you.

Just out of curiosity... why aren't you voting?

Did not vote early... Actually not voting at all...

Here are my reasons:
1. I am a Hilary Clinton supporter. Die-hard. It's not that I don't like Obama or don't want him to win... Because I do like him and I do want him to win, but if I went to the polls to vote, it would be to write in my candidates name (which I have done before in previous elections).
2. I live in Massachusetts.. SO let's face it, there is no way in hell that this state will go red in presidential race. It hasn't in a few decades.
3. If you register to vote, you open yourself to be called for jury duty in this state. I don't want to be called.
4. I am moving to Canada, and while my vote does still matter, I felt that taking the time to go to the polls to vote for a candidate who I merely "like as a friend" and don't "love" would be the equivalent of marrying a guy just because he's available and asked you... Not because you are truly in love with him.

If Massachusetts was a swing state or a traditionally red state, I certainly would have voted. I would say "fuck all my reasons for not wanting to take the time to go to the polls!" But, again, Massachusetts is a blue state. There's no way it's going red.

I am pissed I did not get a sticker at the polls!

I am very shocked that you're not voting and equally shocked by your reasoning.

I too was a Hillary supporter, but the reality is, she is not the Democratic candidate. I'd say that a lot of people vote for a particular candidate, not because they "love" them, but because they are choosing the lesser of two evils.

And as far as you not registering to vote because you don't want to be "open to Jury Duty" is really not a valid answer. If you want democracy (which trial by jury provides) you have to take all aspects of it; you can't cherry pick. I've been called for Jury Duty twice and it's no picnic, but it isn't really that horrible either. You can't get called more than once every 3 years and the vast majority of those called, get sent home the same day without actually being chosen for a jury. To me, this is a small price to pay to be able to have a choice in electing my local, state and federal officials.

What it boils down to, is, if you don't vote, then you can't complain about the state of government affairs. You're just as much to blame for not taking responsibility for being part of the democratic process by using your vote to create the society you'd benefit most from.

After the last 8 years of Bush and the current state of the war in Iraq and the economy, I cannot believe anyone wouldn't take this opportunity to vote for the next president. It's just hard to fathom!

Like I said, Anonymous, this is Massachusetts... It's going blue. If there was a shot in hell that it wasn't, I would totally be in line right now.

I think my not voting actually demonstrates what is wrong with the American electoral system. It NEEDS to be based on popularity... Not electoral votes. That is the only way to ensure that every vote in this country does in deed count, and the only way to get more and more people to actually vote.

And I disagree COMPLETELY with the notion of simply being okay with voting for "the lesser of two evils."

I am grateful that in this country, I have options. And that I am free to exercise my right not to be 100% satisfied with either candidate and not be forced to vote.

(And in case you were curious, my satisfaction rate with each candidate is 75% Obama and 35% McCain.)

If I could write in a vote for Clinton, have it legitimately count towards the the overall tally, then, hell yes I would vote.

But in this country, this is not how it works. As we saw in 2000 and kinda in 2004, we have a crap system. And in an election where it's not my candidate on the ticket and it's a crap system, why bother supporting it with my vote?

And, Anonymous, when you say in your prissy voice, "What it boils down to, is, if you don't vote, then you can't complain about the state of government affairs."... That's bitch statement. The common cop out for people who get upset because someone is not exercising their right to vote.

Yes, I CAN complain about the state of the government even though I chose not to vote. You want to know WHY? BECAUSE I FUCKING PAY WAY MORE IN TAXES THAN YOU PROBABLY DO.

ANY American who files a tax return has the right to complain about WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANT TO, regardless of whether or not they voted.

I'll vote when I can do it with a solid feeling that I can support the candidate and/or the system that gets them elected. And right now, I don't at all support the system, and I only 75% support the better candidate.

I refuse to just accept something because it's one of the choices. Again, I am free to feel this way because this is MASSACHUSETTS... If this were Arizona, or Ohio, or Colorado or Florida, you bet I would have sucked it up and voted.

So, if you need me to further kick your ass off of your high horse, I'd gladly take time out of my busy day to do so.

Lets just hope for the sake of the dem. party that not all Hilary supporters think like you.. otherwise this election could take an unexpected turn... especially since Ms. Clinton dominated MA in the primary election, we all know how blue MA is...but remember NOTHING is impossible.
Frogger said…
Personally, I believe voting is a responsibility. It's your responsibility as an American to vote for your local, state and federal rights. If you choose not to vote, then you live with what the final decision is, and you forfeit your right to complain about policy-makers. However, you do get the right to bitch about policy, so long as you pay taxes and contribute to state funding.
Frogger said…
You know me... I'm one of the most patriotic people you've ever met! But I do believe you have rights, and you have responsibilities.

Voting, in my mind, is a responsibility. If you view it as a right, that's your choice and as an American, you're allowed that choice. Yes, because you pay taxes and support your local government, I believe you do get a right to bitch about local policies. But, I don't think you're entitled to cry if the other party wins. (not that you would cry, but you understand my point).

You are, however, entitled to make sure your house is stocked with Kleenex and scotch so that you can console me if the country is red.
Me said…
Well, if the country goes red, it won't be because of Massachusetts... But I will make sure I am stocked with the appropriate needs for you.

good post frogger!! I agree. As for the missus... we better not be seeing you trying to claim your free cup of starbucks :)

LOL!

No worries. No free cup for me. I paid for my cup today with my new Starbucks Gold card. I will not cheat the system or take advantage of the good nature of businesses.

forget blue...we need your vote to turn massachusetts GREEN!

Vote yes on #2!

I totally support your thoughts on why you are not voting. Funny thing is, I actually got called for Jury Duty before I was registered to vote- I'd love to know how that works! Haha
April Elizabeth said…
your vote on question 1 matters in MA.

this is a huge question
Anonymous said…
FYI - Registering to vote does not get you on the list for Jury Duty. . . Just being a resident gets you that privilege!

http://juryexperiences.org/?p=3162

I'm not registered in MA and have been called twice.
Me said…
InThisLife, i believe the state of Massachusetts pulls form voter registration records OR from the Motor Vehicle records. So if you have a Mass State license, they can get a hold of you that way.

I don't have a Mass license.
April Elizabeth said…
although i disagree with the decision (i fall in line more with a responsibility than a choice line of thought) it is a choice and its yours to make.

Also agreed voting does not equal absolute right to bitch paying your taxes equals the right to bitch.
Sarah S said…
While you're right that MA is about as blue as you can get - what about the state laws we're voting on today, where every vote does count? I know you won't be living here too much longer, but don't you want to have a say on how the state - and your state taxes - is run?

The anon commenter who said "Lets just hope for the sake of the dem. party that not all Hilary supporters think like you.. otherwise this election could take an unexpected turn..." makes a very valid point. And, as a non-Hilary and no-Obama supporter, he/she is right. At the same time, I don't think this state will ever turn red no matter who does or does not turn out to vote.
Me said…
Excellent point Sarah!

And to be honest, when it came to Mass State props on the ballot, I honestly felt that because I am moving in the Spring, it wasn't truly my place to vote. though, if I had, here is how I would have voted on 1, 2, and 3...

1 - NO
2 - HELL YES
3 - Mostly likely NO, but I do realize that this type of gaming does provide jobs. I don't actually want to get rid of it... I just want there to be better care for these animals.
Sigh...
There are so many things that I would like to say in response to this post and the comments..but I'll just stick to the facts so I can get back to making telephone calls to get out the vote!

I just want to emphasize for readers that the jury summons source list is not compiled from the driver's license and voting registries only. The jury summons list is made from the list of residents which is submitted by each Mass. town or city to the Office of Jury Commissioner each year. So if you are registered to vote, answer a census, have a driver's license, pay taxes, receive a water bill or other utility bill, or do anything that gets you on your town's "list of residents" (the compilation of which is governed by the individual towns) you are up for jury duty. I can personally vouch that this is the way the system works - I was called for jury duty before I had a MA license, before I paid taxes here, and before I registered to vote here.

I can't resist interjecting a bit of opinion that is on topic. I believe, as you do, that the president should be chosen by popular vote instead of electoral vote. It is for THAT reason that I choose to vote in every election, even though I live in a very blue state. We will only make the change to a popular-vote-takes-all system when there are more and greater inequitable results. Al Gore's winning the popular vote by 500,000 votes didn't make the case. But another losing candidate who wins the popular vote by 5,000,000 votes might do it. Or maybe it will take 25,000,000. But that change won't happen if many strong red or blue state voters like you and me choose not to vote because we feel our vote does not matter as much as that of a swing-stater.

Your answer to why you are not voting is why Americans are considered lazy.

Good Job.

And good job for thinking that anyone who is appalled that you aren't voting is on a "high horse"
Me said…
Listen Anonymous (or should I say "See U Next Tuesday"), don't fucking call me lazy. I'll wrap miles around your sorry bitch ass in work ethic, tax payments and commentary. So I am FAR from lazy.

Additionally, I am COMPLETELY fine if people are appalled by my decision not to vote.... That's why I did this blog post, I wanted to generate discussion, commentary and the like...

BUT, when someone comes into my domain (aka "my blog") and tells me I can't complain about government decisions imply because I chose not to vote can, I can't have an opinion can SUCK IT.

THIS IS A MOTHER FUCKING FREE COUNTRY. PEOPLE MAY EXERCISE THEIR RIGHT NOT TO SUPPORT EITHER CANDIDATE BY NOT VOTING.

So go fuck yourself, whore Anonymous. And if you don't know how, I will gladly connect you with the plethora of free sex toys that are available from various sites to people who voted in this presidential election.

As a voter in today's election, you are entitled to leverage the free things from businesses for voting. I am not at liberty leverage them (because, again, I did not vote), but you certainly are.

So please do let me know if you need help fucking yourself.

It is with utter relief that I read that you're leaving this country. Good riddance to an entitled American who gives this a country a bad name.
Me said…
Ummm.... Listen cunt Anonymous... trust me, America does not want me to leave because of the amount I pay in taxes each year. Probably at least three times your annual income, likely six times your annual income... AND THAT'S JUST IN TAXES.

ENJOY PAYING FOR THE BAILOUT WITHOUT MY HELP!

And, it's actually people like you who are self-righteous and stuck-up who don't realize that this is FUCKING AMERICA... And in FUCKING AMERICA people are free to NOT VOTE IF THEY ARE NOT 100% SATISFIED WITH WHAT"S BEING OFFERED.

So go fuck yourself. And please, out of respect for your own self, please start using your REAL FUCKING CUNT NAME to leave comments on my blog. STOP using just "ANONYMOUS." That is weak. Because if I actually know you, I would like the opportunity to actually say these words to your fucking cunt face.

A dirty mouth, using excuses for laziness...and unpatriotic...you will fit in very well in Canada!

Umm... Bitch please... Have you ever been to Canada?

THEY ARE SOME OF THE NICEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD.

Now, again, please grow some balls, and stop hiding behind an "Anonymous" handle.

Cunt.

You sound like the biggest piece of trash speaking like that. What respectful woman uses that word?

Its too bad you missed out voting in this historic election. Something I'm sure you will always regret.

Have fun in Canada, god knows people in the US won't miss you.

Listen, (insert nasty word of your choice here, Anonymous), if I wasn't well-liked or my company enjoyed, you wouldn't see all the comments left on this and other posts on my blog.

So yes, people do enjoy my presence in America. And like I said, so does the US government. (Again, enjoy paying for your bailout without my not-so-small contribution!)

And as I said in the above comments... Obama is a good candidate. he wasn't my candidate, though.

So get your ass of your high horse, and quit hating just because I REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE OPTIONS GIVEN TO ME IN THIS ELECTION PROCESS.

And FYI, I will not be publishing anymore of your comments till you at least start using a handle of some kind.

Now fuck off, bitch cunt.

If anonymous loathes you so much, why is she reading this blog? It's a free country, thankfully, and she can choose to walk away from this blog (just as you can walk away from the voting line) at any time.

I guess some people never learned to act like big girls and walk away from the playground.

I'll admit it... I am a little out there with the foul language on this post.

I am sorry readers.

But, please know that I only use this language when people are nasty to me AND ONLY IDENTIFY THEMSELVES AS "ANONYMOUS."

Otherwise, I am a very verbally civilized person.

WTF is wrong with people? Sorry, my panties are in a bunch still over Prop 8 passing. But seriously, this is the Missus's blog so if she wants to call you a CUNT or even use my favorite CUNTFACE or another oldie but goodie, SNATCH, she's completely within her right to do so. Because you verbally assaulting her about how unAmerican she is is bullshit. It proves and improves nothing! Let's hope not all "Americans" are like you, Anonymous SNATCH! Plus, as someone who has had interaction with the Missus outside of the "friend" realm, I can tell you she is a complete pleasure and delight. I can't attest to the US missing her, but Boston certainly will and I will as well.
