Black is the new "Black."
I hate it when people say there is a replacement for the color black. You know, such as "Eggplant is the new black." Or, "chocolate is the new black." Black is black. There's no substitute for it.
I love the color black. Most of my wardrobe is black. Not because I am channeling some kind of "mod" or "artistic" vibe... But because it's a fantastic shade on anybody. It's difficult to look bad in black. It's your standby color season after season. You can wear anytime, anywhere.
The most notorious piece of black clothing is (of course) the little black dress. Or "LBD" for short.
Legend has it that the idea of the LBD was created by Coco Chanel. Every designer makes an attempt at creating their own version of the LBD; and no matter what time of year, you can always find one of these classic pieces.
Now, most women will play it safe when it comes to the LBD and stick with a the "shift" LBD.
This is an okay standby. But there's nothing sexy about it. And it's kind of boring. The one thing the LBD should give off no matter who it is on is a hint of allure. A woman should look sexy in it, not matronly or like a bridesmaid. So here are my recommendations for a sexy LBD this season.
Ann Taylor Loft
This is a very sweet LBD. An overlay with a nude underlay. It's perfect for spring. Dressy enough to wear to dinner, and sweet enough to wear to a wedding or party.
Ann Taylor
Yes. The strapless knee-length LBD is just as common as the "shift" LBD. But this one from Ann Taylor is definitely breaking that mold by adding inverted pleats, creating a bubble-effect to the skirt. This is a perfect "day to evening" LBD. Throw a cardigan over it, and you can wear it to the office. Take the cardi off and it's just incredibly sexy.
Banana Republic
Ooh la la! This strapless LBD from Banana Republic is quite tempting! It's tight in all the right places and the belting creates great curves. Of course the slit is pretty hot too. Perfect for the temptress in all of us.
Chloe
This one is just sweet. It picks up on that whole Bohemian vibe that has penetrated runway collections for Spring 2006. This one is a little on the casual side. But it could work in both office and party areas with the right accessories. It's adorable. And the deep "V" in the front really creates a wonderful effect on the breasts. Very sexy. Sexy and sweet.
Marc Jacobs
Oh... This one is my FAVORITE!!!!! I love it. It is just another exquisite example of why Marc Jacobs is the "sh%t." From the front, this dress looks conservative and elegant. From the back, it is sexy and elegant. Perfect for many occasions. I am totally craving this dress. But there's no way I can buy it. It's part of the Marc Jacobs collection. And right now, my budget is more "Marc" by Marc Jacobs. (Which is the cheaper line from MJ.) But if I had no budget, I would go out and snatch this piece up. I would wear it with D'Orsay pumps and a long, straight, sleek ponytail.
Moschino
The perfect LBD to wear to a wedding or an important dinner. The bow at the hip that leads into a waterfall of ruffles gives a new twist to the strapless LBD. I would wear this one with bright cherry red sandals. It's definitely a playful dress. The girl who wears this has to have a matching attitude.
Diane vonFurstenburg
DVF is the classic queen of the LBD after Coco Chanel. She created the "wrap dress" in the early 1970s, and it's a trend that has maintained ever since. This season she has a very sexy version of the wrap dress available. The dress is lined with a satin edge and has an open back. Gorgeous, and surprising.
