Clothing Donation In Boston?

Yeah...

A few weeks ago I cleaned out my closet.  And I realized I have a shit load of clothes to donate.  Nice clothes.  Stuff in good condition.  So I went online and searched for a charity who would come and pick them up.  Know what I found?

NOTHING!

Not a single charity will pick up clothing donations in Boston.  Outside of Boston, sure.  Inside Boston, no.  So unless I want to haul four heavy bags of clothes to a donation site myself (which I don't), I am left with only one option...

Stick the bags outside on trash day and hope someone who needs them finds them and takes them.

So, in one last ditch effort to not do this, I must ask you all, "Does anyone know of a service that picks up clothing donations?"

I'm really surprised that there are none of those drop off bins in Boston that are close by to you.

Anyhoo, I'd probably be willing to pick 'em up - I have friends who enjoy organizing "clothing swaps" and the rest gets donated. Let me know, missus! =)
I am fairly certain that the Big Brother and Big Sister Foundation will pick up at your home or office; they do pick ups in my neighborhood. You can schedule here:

Yep... That's the first one I thought of when I began looking. I contacted them to schedule a pick-up, and they don't pick up in my neighborhood. They directed me to their drop-off site in Allston.

And I can't really haul these bags to work for a pick-up... But that is certainly a consideration. I'll check with them again to see if they will at least pick up at that address. Thanks@

I had the same problem earlier this year. I contacted a church in my neighborhood - just a few blocks away - and asked if they needed any donations. Of course, they always need donations. I told them I'd need help getting everything there (like you, I couldn't schlep all these bags myself). They sent over two grade school kids to help me - I gave them each $5 as a thank you, and the church got six bags of clothes.
salvation army picks up I think. and if you are able to drop off they are right over the mass ave bridge in central square. plus you would be in my neck of the woods and we could have coffee!

I'm not sure about clothing but if you ever need to get rid of BOOKS, I know how to do that!! www.gotbooks.com picks up books, CDs, and DVDs for free. i used them when i moved. they are great. check 'em out, tell a friend. :)

The same thing happened to me - places would accept dropoffs during their hours (most of which were during the week when I work), and it would have been a costly inconvenience to try and donate stuff. Luckily, someone who lives in Western Mass was visiting and took the stuff to drop in one of the many bins they have out there.

Absolutely ridiculous (and sadly, SO Boston) that they make this process so difficult.

I don't know of a service that will pick them up, but maybe list them on ebay? If anything from your closet was my size, I'd be more than happy to pay shipping!

There's a huge GoodWill center on the edge of the South End on Harrison Ave, but, but no, they probably don't pick up. I'd guess it's a $5 taxi ride from Tremont St, and they provide receipts for taxes.

I've also seen people frequently leave clothing outside the Salvation Army HQ on Columbus Ave & Berkely St. You could drop off one bag at a time...consider it a bicep/shoulder workout to shlep each one there.

That's actually a great idea. Thanks Anonymous!
I am in the process of starting a non-profit retail clothing outlet for men. I need donations. Perhaps Boston could be the market. I'd gladly pick up. I will retail in the burbs and online.

I used to buy my clothes at Salvation Army, mostly because I have ecletic taste, little cash, and always felt like I was both donating AND recycling... all while getting new used clothes.

Its always bothered me that there were no used clothes stores for men... Tom iamgraham@gmail.com.
