Question: Sharks?

I may have an opportunity when I go to Melbourne at the end of the month... And I just wanted to take a quick little poll...

If you had the opportunity to swim with a shark, would you do it?  Even if you didn't really know how to swim?

Feel free to leave your answer after the comments.  Thanks!

Hey Missus, I love your blog!
Don't know what type of sharks you would be diving with... I went diving with grey nurse sharks at Oceanworld in Manly, Sydney, when I was there a year ago. They are the least aggressive breed of sharks and fed regularly and so it's very unlikely they will take a bite out of you :) And they were AMAZING. I would do it again in a heart beat. Sharks are such beautiful, majestic creatures, and to see one swim by within feet of you is just fantastic... so go for it! Go swim the sharks!

When I was in Mexico, they gave us a chance to "swim with sharks" but it was really just standing in like 3 feet of water with sharks. So if it's like that, you won't have to actually swim at all!

I've done it unintentionally while scuba diving. Once I realized what I was in the water with, even though it was a good distance away, I wanted back on the boat. Immediately!

I would do it but only if I had Richard Dreyfuss with me.

yes!if it's at the aquarium do it. as a melburnian I can tell you it's hard to get the opportunity to do that. It's generally at feeding time and it looks amazing!
Dear god no. I couldn't even force myself to snorkel through the shark reef at Disney. I'm not afraid of much, but sharks? Seeing Jaws just once was enough to scar me for life.

Do it. When would you ever do it otherwise? (Unless you're Vanessa who did it by mistake).

Think of it this way: You're with certified professionals whose job it is to train sharks to enjoy swimming with the hundreds of people a day who get in the tank with them.

Also, these are not great white sharks. These are very kind creatures who only attack when provoked. So, if you don't provoke the shark, the shark will play nice with you. And I know you... please don't provoke the shark. (Oh, and don't shave your legs the morning before you get into the water).

Do it - you'll have an amazing story to tell!

I recommend it! I have actually looked into it and you can do down the Cape or in Naragansett, RI. There you actually get all the gear on, they take you on a boat out to the ocean, and you go in a cage like you see on documentaries! It looks totally safe and completely fun!! I have no idea what they do there but I would love to do. Looks like such an amazing experience and this is coming from someone who will not bungee jump, sky dive, and still gets nervous at the take off and landing of flights!!

Like Vanessa, I've done it accidentally. Doing a deep-water (100') dive off Gloucester off a local dive boat, several of what we think were blue sharks (definitely sharks, not 100% they were blues) were curious about what these funny bubbly diver things were. They're beautiful! They didn't come close to us, just hung out at the edge of visibility, watching us, curious. Told a friend about it the next day, and his immediate reaction was, "and you weren't immediately back on the boat?" Nope -- too fascinated by the sharks! They're not the killing machines that things like Jaws and such make them out to be. I'd dive with sharks on purpose in a heartbeat.
