Motley On Tremont Closing - Sign Of The Times?

I noticed something while walking home form the subway last night after work...

Motley (the store on Tremont) had signage in their window saying they were closing.

It is an eclectic store with all kinds of fun things... But I can see how it may be struggling in an economic climate such as the current one.

I guess no more fun trinkets and funny cards from there! I hope other stores don't close too.

Everyone, shop the small businesses in town!!!!!

The owner of Motley is a fantastic guy and has been a huge source of support since I first opened. I can't even tell you how sad I am about this. It's like a little piece of my heart is gone.

PS...Buy local and support small businesses!!! :)

Does, "buy local" mean going to Francesca's or Buttery or your local shop downtown instead of Starbucks? I say yes. Yes. Yes.

Wait. I know you want to rationalize. Mega-chain is mega-chain, and local is local. Those little places have fine coffee, even if they only have 500 choices instead of 5000. Buy local, even when the corporate behemoth gives their clerks health insurance and uses fair-trade coffee.

ps - a new clothing store is opening on Columbus Ave, in the strip near Giacomo's. Not sure if the stuff is crap or nice, they were just dressing the mannequins this week. Still, it's a brave move these days.

There are tons of reasons people should support local shops. For one thing, a lot of times you get better, much more personal service, even if you spend quite a bit less. I know many of my customers by first name and know what they've purchased in the past so I can get them into something that is perfect for them. And b/c so many of my customers are friends and loved ones (my fiancee was a customer first) are customers, it's not about making money but also making an honest judgment on what is good for that person. Also, the money directly impacts the betterment of the entire state, city, town. I pay taxes to MA, I pay my rent to a local business and I pay to shop at other local shops when possible so the money better impacts and improves the direct community as much as possible.

Also, often the smaller shops haven't crunched numbers (like many dept. stores) to decide what to stock in their shops. A lot of it is based on their own loves and whims. Sometimes you get to select from items that were picked sometimes especially with "you" in mind. It's not unusual for me to get something for the shop and think "XX will look amazing in this top, I will get this so she can wear it". That feels really special to me.

Besides the fact that your money really goes so much further and is so much more appreciated at local businesses, shopping local often makes people feel good and leaves them with a good experience. Granted I'm here to try and make a living, but my businesses are everything to me and total labors of love above anything else.

One of my favorite restaurants (Brown Sugar Cafe in Fenway) recently shut its doors. The Comm Ave location is still open but its not the same. I hate this economy. . .

Motley isn't closing because business is bad. He is moving to Portsmouth NH to start his bed and breakfast place that he bought. He doesn't want to do retail anymore.
