Hope you all have a stress-free day! And I hope the election goes the way you want it to go.
I am not voting today... But I am hoping for a BLUE victory in the presidential race. (And I am quite sure it will happen!)

Here are my reasons:
1. I am a Hilary Clinton supporter. Die-hard. It's not that I don't like Obama or don't want him to win... Because I do like him and I do want him to win, but if I went to the polls to vote, it would be to write in my candidates name (which I have done before in previous elections).
2. I live in Massachusetts.. SO let's face it, there is no way in hell that this state will go red in presidential race. It hasn't in a few decades.
3. If you register to vote, you open yourself to be called for jury duty in this state. I don't want to be called.
4. I am moving to Canada, and while my vote does still matter, I felt that taking the time to go to the polls to vote for a candidate who I merely "like as a friend" and don't "love" would be the equivalent of marrying a guy just because he's available and asked you... Not because you are truly in love with him.
If Massachusetts was a swing state or a traditionally red state, I certainly would have voted. I would say "fuck all my reasons for not wanting to take the time to go to the polls!" But, again, Massachusetts is a blue state. There's no way it's going red.
I too was a Hillary supporter, but the reality is, she is not the Democratic candidate. I'd say that a lot of people vote for a particular candidate, not because they "love" them, but because they are choosing the lesser of two evils.
And as far as you not registering to vote because you don't want to be "open to Jury Duty" is really not a valid answer. If you want democracy (which trial by jury provides) you have to take all aspects of it; you can't cherry pick. I've been called for Jury Duty twice and it's no picnic, but it isn't really that horrible either. You can't get called more than once every 3 years and the vast majority of those called, get sent home the same day without actually being chosen for a jury. To me, this is a small price to pay to be able to have a choice in electing my local, state and federal officials.
What it boils down to, is, if you don't vote, then you can't complain about the state of government affairs. You're just as much to blame for not taking responsibility for being part of the democratic process by using your vote to create the society you'd benefit most from.
After the last 8 years of Bush and the current state of the war in Iraq and the economy, I cannot believe anyone wouldn't take this opportunity to vote for the next president. It's just hard to fathom!
I think my not voting actually demonstrates what is wrong with the American electoral system. It NEEDS to be based on popularity... Not electoral votes. That is the only way to ensure that every vote in this country does in deed count, and the only way to get more and more people to actually vote.
And I disagree COMPLETELY with the notion of simply being okay with voting for "the lesser of two evils."
I am grateful that in this country, I have options. And that I am free to exercise my right not to be 100% satisfied with either candidate and not be forced to vote.
(And in case you were curious, my satisfaction rate with each candidate is 75% Obama and 35% McCain.)
If I could write in a vote for Clinton, have it legitimately count towards the the overall tally, then, hell yes I would vote.
But in this country, this is not how it works. As we saw in 2000 and kinda in 2004, we have a crap system. And in an election where it's not my candidate on the ticket and it's a crap system, why bother supporting it with my vote?
And, Anonymous, when you say in your prissy voice, "What it boils down to, is, if you don't vote, then you can't complain about the state of government affairs."... That's bitch statement. The common cop out for people who get upset because someone is not exercising their right to vote.
Yes, I CAN complain about the state of the government even though I chose not to vote. You want to know WHY? BECAUSE I FUCKING PAY WAY MORE IN TAXES THAN YOU PROBABLY DO.
ANY American who files a tax return has the right to complain about WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANT TO, regardless of whether or not they voted.
I'll vote when I can do it with a solid feeling that I can support the candidate and/or the system that gets them elected. And right now, I don't at all support the system, and I only 75% support the better candidate.
I refuse to just accept something because it's one of the choices. Again, I am free to feel this way because this is MASSACHUSETTS... If this were Arizona, or Ohio, or Colorado or Florida, you bet I would have sucked it up and voted.
So, if you need me to further kick your ass off of your high horse, I'd gladly take time out of my busy day to do so.
Voting, in my mind, is a responsibility. If you view it as a right, that's your choice and as an American, you're allowed that choice. Yes, because you pay taxes and support your local government, I believe you do get a right to bitch about local policies. But, I don't think you're entitled to cry if the other party wins. (not that you would cry, but you understand my point).
You are, however, entitled to make sure your house is stocked with Kleenex and scotch so that you can console me if the country is red.
No worries. No free cup for me. I paid for my cup today with my new Starbucks Gold card. I will not cheat the system or take advantage of the good nature of businesses.

I don't have a Mass license.
Also agreed voting does not equal absolute right to bitch paying your taxes equals the right to bitch.
The anon commenter who said "Lets just hope for the sake of the dem. party that not all Hilary supporters think like you.. otherwise this election could take an unexpected turn..." makes a very valid point. And, as a non-Hilary and no-Obama supporter, he/she is right. At the same time, I don't think this state will ever turn red no matter who does or does not turn out to vote.
And to be honest, when it came to Mass State props on the ballot, I honestly felt that because I am moving in the Spring, it wasn't truly my place to vote. though, if I had, here is how I would have voted on 1, 2, and 3...

2 - HELL YES
3 - Mostly likely NO, but I do realize that this type of gaming does provide jobs. I don't actually want to get rid of it... I just want there to be better care for these animals.
There are so many things that I would like to say in response to this post and the comments..but I'll just stick to the facts so I can get back to making telephone calls to get out the vote!
I just want to emphasize for readers that the jury summons source list is not compiled from the driver's license and voting registries only. The jury summons list is made from the list of residents which is submitted by each Mass. town or city to the Office of Jury Commissioner each year. So if you are registered to vote, answer a census, have a driver's license, pay taxes, receive a water bill or other utility bill, or do anything that gets you on your town's "list of residents" (the compilation of which is governed by the individual towns) you are up for jury duty. I can personally vouch that this is the way the system works - I was called for jury duty before I had a MA license, before I paid taxes here, and before I registered to vote here.
I can't resist interjecting a bit of opinion that is on topic. I believe, as you do, that the president should be chosen by popular vote instead of electoral vote. It is for THAT reason that I choose to vote in every election, even though I live in a very blue state. We will only make the change to a popular-vote-takes-all system when there are more and greater inequitable results. Al Gore's winning the popular vote by 500,000 votes didn't make the case. But another losing candidate who wins the popular vote by 5,000,000 votes might do it. Or maybe it will take 25,000,000. But that change won't happen if many strong red or blue state voters like you and me choose not to vote because we feel our vote does not matter as much as that of a swing-stater.
