I'm a 31!
Decided to hit the Harvard Square late-afternoon Bikram class; which gave me a good part of the day to do some shopping/browsing.
My big scores for the day came after walking through the drizzle from my apartment to Kenmore Square to hit Jean Therapy.
Yay!
I spent about an hour trying on jeans with the denim guru who owns the store. The first thing she said to me regarding the pair of jeans I was wearing when I walked in was "They're too big in the crotch."
Apparently, jeans are not supposed to sag AT ALL, in the SLIGHTEST, in the crotch area. It's a sign the jeans are too big.
She asked what size they were and I said they were a 32. She mandated that I try a size smaller. So she began pulling a wide variety of size 31 jeans in different brands. She included some straight legs and flairs, some low rise and some high rise, and a wide range of washes. (I tend to stick with very dark rinses.)
She said that jeans should not be easy to get on. They should be very, very, very tight.
"Denim is elastic," she reminded me. "They will stretch a size and a half once you wear them a few times. So you need to buy them very tight."
And she was right. After trying on all the 31's, when I went to go put my own jeans back on, I realized how easily they slid up over my hips. This is a "no-no."
In the end, I decided on three pairs of jeans to get:
1. Paige Premium Denim high rise jeans
2. Raven Jeans in a funky wash that is different than what I would normally buy.
3. And Wranglers.
Yep, you read that right. I bought Wranglers.
No, I'm not going "country" on you people. (Despite what kT may wish!) I bought the Wranglers because they are really wicked jeans! The looked really good on me, and they felt so right. Plus, the reason they are carried at Jean Therapy to begin with (which is a place that prides itself on carrying different jeans than you can get everywhere else), is that these Wranglers were designed by one of my favorite designers of all... Marc Jacobs.
Yay! Marc Jacobs!
Apparently they are very new, and there hasn't been really any advertising (yet) that Marc Jacobs designed some Wranglers for this Spring season. There will be, so I am told. And the jeans will NOT be carried at the Marc Jacobs store on Newbury Street. They will only be found in unique boutiques.
The Raven jeans I got are awesome. The color is a soft gray-black. There was also a very dark indigo wash that is more typical of what I prefer. (Because darker colors are slimming.) But I decided to go with the color my jean guru said would be hot this Spring. (She knows best, after all.)
And the Paige Denim high rise jeans are fantastic! When she first said, "Try on these high rise jeans," I thought, "No way. Those are soccer-mum jeans!" But once I got them on, they weren't that high. They came up to a reasonable place on my lower stomach. And they looked great.
So I got three new pairs, but tried on about nine pairs. Not bad. And I am all set for work-jeans now. They're being hemmed this week and I will have them for next week.
Not bad for an afternoon of shopping.

Congrats on finding some awesome jeans. They're not easy to come by! :)
It was great to see you. I had a very fun time helping you with jeans. I think the high rise Paiges will be lots of fun for you. It's a new style called Rising Glen that was just released 12/15 and I think the color is super awesome so 70's hippie feel, yet new and fresh... We are nearly sold out! And the Wranglers are just a piece of great fashion history to have, plus they look fantastic on you.
and jenn, no worries about knowing your "size" that's not your job, it's OUR job as jean specialists to know! I always ask customers what she/he thinks she/he might be as a sounding board. Some brands/styles run big or small so there is no absolute size for anyone. I would say, try small jean stores for guidance but if you need lots of colors and styles to choose from for jeans, you might need a larger store aka dept. store. Small stores, such as mine, tend to stock smaller volume and very specific colors think customer service first; although we are happy to try and order a color/size for any customer!
on that note...some exciting news...i am going to the rodeo for my birthday...yes that is right, a real rodeo down in texas..yesssssssss
