Contest: Where Should We Go For A Mini Vacation?

The Husband and I spent a good 20 minutes last night just sitting around looking at each other before Project Runway came on. There was nothing good on TV just yet. And we had already gone through the whole "how was your day?" bit.

It sounds scary, but it was actually funny. We determined in those 20 minutes that it was time for us to take a mini vacation in the next two months. But there are two problems:
  1. We don't know where to go. (We seem to have lost our imagination lately.)
  2. Wherever we go has to be within the Continental United States. We can't leave the country because The Husband's temporary Greencard is about to expire and we don't want to risk him not being able to get back in, even though he is in the system to receive his permanent one in the coming months.
So I am having a competition, people. Whoever comes up with a really great idea for The Husband and I to take mini vacation (think 4 days, max) gets a very, very cool prize. I won't lie, the prize will probably be something girly and fashionable... But I encourage any and everyone to submit.

The deadline for submissions (which can be left by posting a comment below) is Sunday (August 3rd) night.

Muchas gracias!

Here are a few:

1. The Hot Springs - it's cozy, the scenery is beautiful and the Husband will enjoy it, too.
2. Savannah - it's sultry, it's sexy, it's mysterious... you can always find something to do.
3. Martha's Vineyard - the best time to go is post-tourist season (sept-oct) when the weather is beautiful and the island is quiet and calm.

I may be bias, but I heard Chicago is beautiful in the fall. I don't know who I heard it from. It's probably a rumor :)
I'll leave you the list of mini-breaks we're planning to take, in order of preference, whenever we have time.

1. Miami or Key West - perfect for four days and a short flight too!
2. Chicago
3. Charleston, SC - beautiful town with lots to do and amazing food.
4. Ogunquit, Maine or other Maine coastal town
5. Monterey & Carmel-by-the-Sea - gorgeous coastal towns with lots to explore
6. Palm Springs - sun, golf and spas

The California trips might be a little too much for 4 days but are great little jaunts, particularly if you tack on an extra two days in San Fran (with Monterey) and LA (with Palm Springs).

My favorite U.S. destinations:

1. Key West -- so chill and relaxed. Fly into Miami, rent a car and drive down through the Keys -- so gorgeous!

2. Napa Valley & Sonoma -- in the fall, when the grapes are ripe, it smells HEAVENLY all throughout the area. We rented a convertible and just drove from vineyard to vineyard. A friend found out you can actually hire a driver to take you around too, so you can feel free to taste more wines!

3. VEGAS BABY! Great restaurants! Great shows! Great spas! Great people-watching! Great shopping! I've been four times and it never gets old!

1. provinceton. Fun quirky young and full of energy. The people watching is great and some of the hotels there are really cute.

2. cape cod - brewster and orleans have some beautiful places to stay.

3. martha's vineyard. Love it.

4. Boothbay Harbor, ME. Quiet cozy and sweet little artsy shops. Plus all the lobster you can eat.

I'm all about trips within driving/zipcar? distance and splurge more on the hotel.

My suggestion would be for Lake Tahoe. Beautiful weather, gorgeous scenery and wonderfully laid back people. I'll come back if I think of more.

Nantucket... great shopping, lovely island. Great beaches.
Seattle. Hands down. August and September are the two most glorious months here - perfect 75-85 degrees with almost no humidity.

Here are some highlights of your four day visit:

You can stay in a fantastic boutique hotel or something way fancy. Eat fabulous food. Great sushi, pan-Asian, and Northwest Fusion. Its a great thing. There are of course lots of things to do and see from the Pike Place Market to the Space Needle to taking a ferry ride across the sound.

Seattle is a super-walkable city. If you stay downtown you should be able to walk to almost anything that you'd want to see. Otherwise, our bus system is decent.

In good news - you can take a direct flight on Jet Blue!

Our favorite spot for impromptu trips of that nature is Charleston, SC, so I am seconding that recommendation (even though it exempts me from prize winnings.)

If you feel like something nature-y (and pricey), the Amangani in Jackson Hole is one of my favorite hotels. It is so beautiful and quiet before ski season starts.

If you are thinking more city/beach-y, then I agree with the Miami or Key West suggestions. (I am so unoriginal!)

The minute I read this I thought Key West for you...its perfect for a four day trip.

Also check out Amelia Island, FL (by GA), Sea Isle, GA...lastly the Outer Banks of NC.

Unless you're going to a major metropolis, four days is more that enough time to get to each of these beachy places but have enough time to rest & relax while there.

Nantucket. Close to home, no need for a car. Winery tours, good food, beach... Perfect, no?

1. Triple Creek Ranch in Darby, Montana (www.triplecreekranch.com) is supposed to be AMAZING! Such a beautiful area of the country and so much to do outside. But, the accommodations, service and amenities look totally luxurious.

2. Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, CA is unbelievable.

3. Enchantment Resort in Sedona. Weren't you talking about having never been to Sedona recently?

4. Inn of the Annasazi in Santa Fe, NM. Santa Fe is great any time of year and you could go to the cool Ten Thousand Waves Spa.

You could always do a few days in NYC and eat and shop your way around The City.

I am going to say Daufuskie Island. It is right next to Hilton Head, and it has a fabulous spa. You can go into Hilton Head by boat or take a day trip into Savannah.

The OBVIOUS answer is Sedona. You've been wanting to go, it's a "spiritual vortex", one where you could clense your body before leaving the US, there are many funky shops and restaurants, the hiking is amazing, the red rocks are unbelievable and the South West in general is awesome. You could also take a day trip to Jerome, which used to be an artists colony... so lots of little gems there as well.
