Seatless Cars On the T?

Oh... I hope not!

But it could be a possibility, according to this article in the Globe today.

Because so many more people are riding the T this year, the MBTA is having to consider various options in order to make it easier for people to commute via the T. And removing seats from some of the cars would allow for more people to squeeze onto a train...

...at a time when people are forced to squeeze into rush-hour trains in Boston, the agency is willing, (MBTA General Manager, Daniel) Grabauskas said, to consider just about anything, including, possibly, seatless cars. "It certainly is an idea with some merit."

Okay, I get it. Removing seats from cars would certainly allow more people to get on the train... But you know what else would get more people onto the train at one time??? If people would actually MOVE IN to the cars, rather than camping by the doors.

When I do take the T (which is usually once a week), people get into the train and just stand near a door. They'll be the first ones on the train, and they won't move their asses in to the center. And the people that get on after them don't always push around them to get to the center of the train. So there will be huge holes and gaps in cars, where people have refused to move into.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that more people are taking the T. But people need to get used to the idea that commuting via the T is not going to be the leisurely experience it once was... Long-gone are the days where you can step into a car, sit down and enjoy the un-air conditioned urine-stench and worry you might have sat in gum. Now you will have to stand and take it all in... Packed like cigarettes in a box... Praying that there are delays and that you can get to Point A from Point B as quickly as possible.... Before the urine stench attaches itself to you.

But I don't think taking seats out of the cars is the answer. I think those of us who get on the train closer to where the line starts shouldn't have to endure a long ride standing the entire time. We just all need to be better about cramming into the train. And accept that there will be lucky bastards who get to sit, and there will be really lucky bastards who get to stand and practice balancing.

They're thinking of doing the same thing in Chicago. I'm not sure how I feel about it just yet.

There are a lot of idiots on the T. Take the damn headphones off and move away from the doors.

i get type-a furious at people that don't prepare to get off too. shouldn't everyone have their belongings in hand, ready to get off and move away from the platform? =)
